Abstract
This article analyzes the features of the constitution / reproduction of the class of small proprietors in Ukraine during the 20th century. Stolypin reform created favorable institutional conditions for the constitution of the class of petty bourgeoisie. In the Soviet era, the doctrine of the destruction of private property and exploitative relations led to the deconstitution of this class. The liquidation of private property has been implemented through five successive reforms: War Communism, the New Economic Policy (NEP), mass collectivization, socialization of property, and the achievement of social homogeneity. The reconstitutution of the class of small proprietors was linked to the creation of the institutional prerequisites for the restoration and the legitimation of private property during the times of Perestroika and the post-Soviet transformations. A detailed presentation of the three cases within the process of constitution of this class in the mentioned historical periods includes an analysis of the institutional conditions for the reproduction of the class, of its socio-economic status, of its quantative and structural characteristics.
